Clan Hunter Genealogy

Building a unique archive of our Hunter ancestors.

What is a gedcom file and how to share yours?

GEDCOM (GEnealogical Data COMmunication) is a standard file format that lets different family-tree programs exchange data. It usually has the file extension .ged.

How to create a GEDCOM

Export your tree from the program or website you use (e.g., Ancestry, Family Tree Maker, Legacy, MyHeritage). The steps vary by product, but the flow is typically:

  1. Open your tree.

  2. Look for Export or GEDCOM in Settings/Tools.

  3. Choose Entire tree or the specific people you want.

  4. Save the file (you should get a .ged).

Tip: Many services offer free trials, and most public libraries provide access to at least one genealogy platform—and staff can often help with exports.

What we need

Please send only your Hunter line:

  • Start with yourself and, if your surname isn’t Hunter, follow your line back to your first Hunter (birth-surname) ancestor, then continue forward from that person.

  • Include: all Hunter birth-surnamed individuals, their spouses. Only include one generation of non Hunter surnamed children.

  • Data entry tips:

    • Use the Suffix field for titles/designations (e.g., Jr., Rev., PhD).

    • Keep Given/Forename and Surname fields clear of extra notes or punctuation.

  • Keep your original full tree file—export a copy for us so you don’t lose other lines.

Our approach (accuracy matters!)

Large online trees often include mistakes, so please:

  • Cite your sources where you can.

  • If you’re unsure, leave fields blank or add a “?” to the name/date.

  • Avoid copying other trees without verifying the information.

What happens next

When ready, email the GEDCOM to genealogy@clanhunterscotland.com.

By sending us your GEDCOM, you confirm you are happy for participating Clan members in this group to view those family records.

  • If you have living relatives who prefer not to be included, tell us and we’ll exclude them.

  • Online access is restricted to participating members and the Clan Hunter genealogy admin team. There is no public access. Please register for a new user account.

  • Once we’ve checked and uploaded your file to clanhuntergenealogy.com, we’ll then approve Read-Only access to view other members shared data.
